What is organic pest management?

Organic pest control

Designing a pest control program in an organic facility begins with a thorough inspection and analysis of the facility. The NOP is governed by rule 7 CFR § 205,271 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations and requires that the handler or management of the organic facility use management practices to prevent pests. The updated organic plan should include a list of all measures taken to avoid contact of organically produced products or ingredients with the product used.

Organic farmers use alternative strategies to reduce and control pests without the use of synthetic inputs. However, there are a number of organic pest control methods that can be used without endangering bee populations. In California, pest management plans and materials must be approved by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) or another USDA-accredited organic certification agency. The Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program (NOP) establishes a uniform set of standards that producers, processors, packers and warehouse operators must follow to produce products that are labeled and sold as organic.

Most organic farming professionals focus on preparing soil with a high organic content using materials such as fertilizers and amendments that are considered to be of natural origin. The NOP guidelines describe a specific order of pest management methods in areas where organic products are processed, handled, or stored.
